Tullahoma Republican State Senator Janice Bowling joins six other GOP lawmakers to kill Governor Bill Haslam’s “Insure Tennessee” health plan. Bowling defied fellow Republican Haslam to defeat the effort in a Senate Committee yesterday. The 7 to 4 vote ends a special session of the General Assembly and leaves an estimated 280,000 currently uninsured with no prospect for Government assisted coverage anytime soon. Haslam wanted to use Federal Medicaid funds to offer vouchers for the purchase of private insurance plans. His plan, backed by hospital and business groups, would expire after two years if unsuccessful. Tea Party and other conservative groups strongly opposed “Insure Tennessee”, despite polling that indicated broad support from those aware of the push. Following the vote, Haslam said he has no immediate plans to pursue his initiative.
