A new Federal Courthouse for Nashville has been approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The panel approved the $181 million project last week. Senator Lamar Alexander says the vote should jump start construction of the 386,000 square foot facility that is planned at the corner of Church Street and 7th Avenue North. Several other procedural votes must be passed before funding is complete. Alexander says the new location will replace the Estes Kefauver Federal Building on Broadway. The 61 year old courthouse is overcrowded and doesn’t offer enough security.
