State Lawmaker to be fined by EPA, may have received “Special Treatment”

A West Tennessee Republican Lawmaker facing environmental fines of up to $177,000 resulting from his hog farming operation outside Dreden. WTVF-TV reports the EPA has filed a complaint against State Rep Andy Holt, claiming he illegally discharged waste from the operation without a permit. State records show Holt ran the farm for some 3 years without a proper wastewater discharge permit. Holt closed the farm late last year. State water quality inspectors had tagged the farm for violations several times, but noted that enforcement action had been “discouraged by upper management”. Both Gov. Bill Haslam and Environment and Conservation Commissioner Bob Martineau denied special treatment for the lawmaker. Holt says he is in negotiations with the EPA over settlement.
