Nashville Zoo Welcomes Baby Giraffe

Enzi, the baby giraffe at the Nashville Zoo, made her first appearance with her mom on July 23.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Nashville Zoo’s new baby has a name.

The male Masai giraffe born July 9 is now named Enzi, which is Swahili for “powerful.” The name came from a contest in which visitors could choose from among three names by donating a pair of old blue jeans.

The zoo says it collected more than 700 pairs of used jeans to donate to the Jeans for Giraffes conservation program. The program recycles denim into home insulation with proceeds benefiting giraffe conservation projects in Africa.

The winning name collected 407 pairs of jeans, while Mahali, meaning “spot,” drew 188 pairs and Mkali, or “bright,” brought in 131.
