A 33-year-old Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in fighting in the Pacific during World War II will be buried in Knoxville this month.
The Visit Knoxville organization says the remains of Marine 1st Lt. Alexander Bonnyman Jr. were recovered with dozens of other missing Marines earlier this year by an archaeological team from Florida-based nonprofit History Flight Inc.
Bonnyman’s remains will be returned to Knoxville on Sept. 25 and will lie in honor at East Tennessee Veterans Memorial on Sept. 26. A memorial service and wreath laying will be held at 2:30 p.m. that day, with public visitation to follow.
Bonnyman’s funeral and burial with full military honors will be held on the afternoon of Sept. 27 at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery in Knoxville.
