“Standardized Testing for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Should Be Dropped” Says Commissioner

A State Task Force says annual standardized testing of Kindergarten and 1st grade students should be dropped. The panel seems to agree with many teachers, who complain too much classroom effort is being directed toward test preparation. The task force developed by Education Commissioner Candice McQueen also recommends dropping some test for 8th and 10th grade students. The Tuesday report follows a recent survey of some 37,000 Tennessee Teachers. 60% say they spend too much time preparing students for annual tests. 70% believe students spend too much classroom time taking required exams.
