A pair of Tennessee lawmakers, playing to religious conservatives, say they will introduce legislation which would nullify the Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex unions. Nashville Republican State Senator Mae Beavers and Republican Lebanon Rep. Mark Pody say they will sponsor a bill declaring the decision null and void and of no effect in Tennessee. The measure would prohibit the state from recognizing any marriage that is not a “natural union” between 1 man and 1 woman. Most legal experts agree the bill, if passed, would be struck down in court as unconstitutional. Other lawmakers say they will sponsor bills “protecting” clergy from being forced to officiate same-sex marriages.
