Some Coffee County Commissioners say it’s time to do away with elected constables. The county commission’s legislative panel has voted to recommend doing away with the controversial office. Some believe constables could saddle taxpayers with liability if they are guilty of misconduct in official duties. Others say they offer a valuable addition to law enforcement. A two thirds vote of the full commission would have to approve doing away with the posts. 6 constables now serving would complete terms ending in 2018. The issue has been considered by Coffee County Commissioners in the past. The Tullahoma news reports about 10 Tennessee counties have eliminated the constable’s position.
