Officials in Rutherford County have sent out a warning to all residents about a recent scam.
Authorities said scammers have been calling people and telling them they are from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
They’ve falsely identified themselves as Sergeant Monroe and Lieutenant Garrison, and they have been threatening residents by telling them they must pay for missing jury duty or civil warrants.
“These callers impersonating Sheriff’s Office deputies are intimidating citizens to try to get money from them,” Sheriff Robert Arnold said. “Let me assure the citizens our deputies do not call people insisting they must pay for missing jury duty.
Scammers have claimed the citizens must pay $1,800 for missing jury duty or $986.35 for a civil warrant.
“For civil cases, deputies leave informational cards at people’s residences asking them to call or come by the Sheriff’s Office,” the sheriff said. “We do not ask people to give us money for missing jury duty or for civil warrants.”
Those with the Sheriff’s Office have said anyone who has received one of these calls should just hang up.
