A Murfreesboro lawyer who was no stranger to courtroom controversy died suddenly last night. A release by the Rutherford County bar association says legal maverick Joe Brandon died from an apparent heart attack. Brandon was known to take on thorny legal issues. About 10 years ago he fought a lengthy court battle to stop construction of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. Brandon’s clients alleged zoning rules were violated in granting a construction permit for the center. But foreshadowing today’s debate, he implied the mosque could be a magnet attracting radical Muslims to the area. Brandon later represented Shanterrica Madden, who is serving jail time for 2nd degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of her room-mate, Middle Tennessee State University basketball standout Tina Stewart.
