Legislation to Force UT to keep “Lady Vols” Name Officially Filed

As promised, a state lawmaker has filed legislation requiring the University of Tennessee to recognize all female sport teams as the lady vols. On July 1st the university dropped the Lady Vols moniker for all female teams except the basketball squad. It switched team logos to the “Power T” and renamed teams as the Volunteers in order to comply with a licensing agreement with athletic equipment maker Nike. Knoxville republican state rep. Roger Kane says his bill is necessary because University Trustees ignored the protests by some 30,000 fans who petitioned to keep the Lady Vols tradition. He says 44 other state lawmakers support his bill. A University of Tennessee spokesman says the school has no comment about the bill.
