Confidential tips helped Tennessee officials identify a record amount of misused taxpayer dollars and government funds in the past fiscal year.
According to a news release from the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury Tuesday, the department uncovered more than $1.1 million in confirmed thefts, questionable costs and shortages in public funds statewide from July 2014 to June 2015.
The comptroller says that’s thanks to anonymous tips to its online and telephone hotline. Those tipsters helped uncover fraud, waste and abuse of public funds across a number of entities, including municipalities, counties, state agencies and non-profit recipients of government funds.
“The hotline plays an important role in holding government accountable to its citizens,” Comptroller Justin Wilson said in the release. “While I’m pleased to see the hotline is serving its purpose, the ultimate goal is to eliminate fraud, waste and abuse in government.”
