Inmate Hanging Probed by TBI

TBI has released the name of the inmate who died at the Rutherford County jail Saturday.

“Preliminary information gathered by agents indicates the inmate, Jonathan Maxwell (date of birth June 11, 1983) hanged himself with the cord of a pay phone in a holding cell shortly after his arrest for an alleged domestic assault against his wife,” TBI spokesman Josh Devine wrote in an email to The Daily News Journal Sunday.

Devine said Saturday that the TBI began its investigation into Maxwell’s death at the request of 16th District Attorney General Jennings Jones and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. The TBI typically investigates activity that involves local law enforcement.

An autopsy will be performed, Devine stated. Those results as well as other evidence gathered by TBI agents will be submitted to Jones’ office for further review and consideration.
