TSSAA Bill Would Require Ref’s to Pay for Background Checks

There’s a bill moving through the state legislature that would require TSSAA officials to get criminal background checks and pay for it themselves.

The bill comes after an official was charged with statutory rape ten years ago, but since background checks weren’t required, he was allowed to work around children.

It’s a job that takes a lot of patience and willpower.

Carter said his first priority is the student-athletes.

That’s the very reason state Senator Jim Tracy crafted a bill that would make it state law that all TSSAA referees undergo a criminal background check and be fingerprinted.
Tracy was a TSSAA and NCAA official for more than 25 years.
