Early voting record set

Fueled by a hotly contested republican presidential nomination effort, Tennesseans cast early ballots for Tuesday’s primary in record number. Republican primary voters, eager for a say in their party’s presidential pick, out-voted democrats by a 2—1 margin. Almost 390,000 cast early votes statewide, a 17 percent increase over 2008, the last time both parties had open presidential primaries. Some 255,000 voted in the republican primary compared to 128,000 voting in the democrat race. Secretary of State Tre Hargett attributes the spike to hard campaigning in the state by several g-o-p hopefuls including Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio.
