Senator Backs Test Change

Tullahoma Republican State Senator Janice Bowling says school districts should be allowed to use college readiness exams instead of state-mandated testing for high school students. At least 8 school districts agree with the plan, which would substitute the college bound ACT or SAT test for the state’s troubled TN-Ready exam. The online version of TN-Ready failed last month, forcing students to use paper and pencil test forms. School administrators say college entrance tests mean the same in Tennessee as any other state and better serves students and parents. Bowling’s legislation is opposed by the State Department of Education.
