A bill allowing school districts to use college entrance exams instead of a struggling mandated state high school test has failed in the senate education committee. Tullahoma Republican State Senator Janice Bowling wanted to let districts opt to use the A-C-T or S-A-T college exam as an alternative to the state’s TNready high school achievement test. Several districts, including Coffee County and Tullahoma City, backed her bill, which was opposed by the Haslam administration. The TNready exam has been plagued with computer problems. The education committee voted bowling’s bill down by a 7-2 margin.
