January’s unemployment rate slipped below the 5 percent mark in many southern middle Tennessee counties. Coffee County’s unemployment rate dropped by a half point to 4.7 percent in January. The jobless rate in Franklin County fell by 3/10th’s a point to 4.6 percent compared to December. Grundy County’s rate fell from 7.2 to 6.7 percent in January. The state department of labor and workforce development says many counties posted the lowest unemployment rates since the great recession of 2008. University of Tennessee Economist Dr. Bill fox says he believes new jobs will continue to be added for the balance of the year.
