Former Inmate Sues Coffee County

A convicted drug offender has filed a Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit against Coffee County, claiming he was denied medical treatment and assaulted by fellow inmates while incarcerated at the now closed Manchester jail. John Lawrence, age 39, filed the Civil Rights action against the County Sheriff, County General Government, a Medical Company and a Doctor in the US District Court in Knoxville. Lawr3ence claims jailers denied him use of prescription drugs to treat mental illness and were negligent by allowing his assault by cell mates. The Chattanooga Times Free Press says Lawrence was held in the Coffee County Jail last spring for probation violation. He has since been transferred to a State Prison, serving time for Franklin County drug violations. County Attorney Robert Huskey says he hasn’t reviewed the details of the man’s claim.
