DUI and Drug Penalties Could Change in Tennessee

Repeat DUI offenders would face a longer jail term, but simple drug possession would be partially decriminalized under legislation approved by the house Thursday, the bill increases the felony range for someone with 6 or more DUI or carjacking convictions. The bill would make 3 or more convictions for simple possession of any drug, including cocaine and methamphetamine, a misdemeanor punishable by a fine or jail term of less than a year. Simple possession applies when a small amount of contraband is found with no intent to sell or distribute. The bill passed by an 80-7 margin.
