Effort to Stop Education Lawsuit Fails

Legislative efforts to short-circuit Coffee County’s legal challenge over state funding of education is apparently dead in the General Assembly for this year. A move to amend the State’s Constitution, giving the General Assembly total final authority over public education spending, died in a Senate Committee Vote response to legal action by Coffee, Grundy and Marion Counties that claims the state is in violation of the Constitutional requirement affording a free public education to all. Four other counties have joined the suit, which claims the state’s basic education program funding formula doesn’t account for spending on many items, including job benefits for teachers. The suit is being heard by a Nashville Chancellor.
