State lawmakers have agreed to strip away funding for The University of Tennessee’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion for 1 year. About $436,000 that accounts for office payroll will be diverted into a Minority Scholarship Program. Lawmakers dropped a controversial plan that would have used some diversity money to print and distribute “In God We Trust” decals for local police cars. Republican lawmakers angry over the University’s policy of promoting “sex week” at the Knoxville campus. They are also riled over a suggestion that non-Christians be accommodated during Christmas celebrations. Republican Gov. Bill Haslam opposed defunding the office.
