A black bear euthanized earlier this month following an attack on a hiker was not the animal responsible for the incident. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park says DNA test show another bear was responsible for the May 10th attack on a sleeping Appalachian Trail hiker. A Las Vegas man was bitten on his leg while sleeping in a tent at The Spence field Shelter in the park. Rangers destroyed a bear they believed responsible for the attack 3 days later. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports tests revealed yet another unknown bear was responsible for the incident. The park says there have been multiple incidents of bears ripping into tents in back countries recently. Experts of the attack probably linked to a lack of natural food in May and June.
